Franklin County Historical Association Calendar

There are only a few FCHA meetings left in 2008, but there are always plenty of events and activities to keep one occupied in Mt. Vernon and Franklin County.

Julian Scott Art Show, Friday, September 5, 7 P.M.
Program: Judd Scott will present a program on the art of his ancestor Julian Scott, an artist and Civil War Medal of Honor recipient, and will discuss the artist's life and work.
Hosts: The Franklin County Historical Association and the Franklin County Arts Alliance will jointly sponsor the event.
Location: A dessert social will precede the program at the Cultural Arts Center. Afterwards, attendees will walk to the Old Jail Art Museum to view some of Julian Scott's works, which will remain on display the following day, 11 A.M. to 3 P.M.

FCHA Meeting, Monday, September 8, 7 P.M.
Program: Folk Lore, presented by Lillie Bush Reves
Hosts: Lillie Bush Reves, Jean Pamplin, Bill & Nancy Miller, and Norm & Carol Horn
Location: Tall Tree Clubhouse - Covered-Dish Meal

A Special Day in Mt. Vernon, Sunday, September 28
The following events are taking place on September 28, and we hope you will join us:
Mozelle Ramsey Retrospective Exhibition, Closing Reception, 1-3 P.M.
lf you have not been by the Old Fire Station Museum to see this exhibition, please join us for a closing reception showcasing over 50 of Mozelle Ramsay's artworks. Works are in oil, water color, and china-painting.
Mt. Vernon Music Whitlock/Clinton Chamber Concert, 3 P.M.
At the corner of Yates and Leftwich Streets, you will hear great music for a group of instruments including a piano, two violins, a viola and a cello: They will perform a powerful youthful work by Shostakovich and, too, Antonin Dvorak's popular Quintet in E-flat.

CountryFest Events, Saturday, Ocotober 11, 2008
A Handmade Holiday, 10 A.M. to 7 P.M.
This is going to be one of the most exciting exhibits ever presented by the FCHA in the landmark train depot of Mt. Vernon.   Enjoy Christmas nostalgia by viewing A Handmade Holiday, an exhibit coordinated by Sue Soetenga, showcasing handmade items from around the world. There will be a demonstration on how to make beautiful German stars. In the collection, you will enjoy crochet lace snowflakes from the Netherlands and needlework from Russia and Belarus, as well as a German goose-feather
Christmas tree decorated with jeweled, quilled and hand-painted porcelain ornaments. Also being shown are local Christmas quilts, needlework, Victorian ribbon roses, and arrangements, all handmade and uniquely displayed. The showing will open at
10 A.M. and be followed by a reception from 5-7 P.M., honoring Sue Soetenga for putting together this wonderful exhibit.
Old Fire Station Museum Exhibits, 10 A.M. to 7 P.M.
The O1d Fire Station Museum will feature the New Beverly Brewer exhibit, the Don Meredith exhibit, the rare bird egg collection, the butterfly collection, and Indain artifacts.  Reception Honoring Beverly Brewer, at the Old Fire Station Museum, 5-7 P.M.
The FCHA is hosting a wine and cheese reception and book signing in the Old Fire Station Museum honoring Beverly Brewer, a local artist who has illustrated our newest publication, Driving Mount Vernon. This brochure highlights public buildings and pre-World War I homes marked by the association. Several of Beverly's illustrations, oil paintings, and decorative gourds will be on display, with many of her works for sale.
Mt. Vernon Music, at the Corner of Yates & Leftwich Streets, 7 P.M.
Enjoy a concert of music for harp and flute to complete your day at the annual CountryFest.
